We took the older version of this tour in 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, it’s better now. Tom Spiglanin, the director of education at Palm Springs Windmill Tours, had created a much more evolved and thorough program. He was super communicative and helpful from booking, on the day of our tour booking before we even arrived, and of course throughout our tour. Such amazing, personal service from start to finish. He loves what he does and has a passion for the wind farm and technology. Even if I was only mildly interested in wind power, this would have been a great tour. But I have great interest and curiosity about the subject, and the Palm Springs farm in particular. So Tom’s love and deep knowledge made the whole experience just the best for me. I’d do this tour again for sure.
The place was amazing. The hosts (Tom, Bill and Annette) were very helpful and friendly. They have a mini theatre where they share information about the windmill and then they took us on a walking tour to the windmill. They also sell souvenirs of the palm springs windmill.
Overall this was a very cool experience. The price was quite high even for the self guided tour. There is a lot of information throughout the tour so it is better for older children or children who have a genuine interest in the turbines. If you were to go stop to stop without listening to the entire audio, you would be done within 30 minutes. With the audio explanation it is 1.5 hours. You can get out and take pictures and touch things though. Im glad we went.
This was a great experience for my whole family! There was a video and personal greeting when we arrived, followed by an opportunity to see the equipment used for creating wind energy up close at our own pace during the driving tour. There were interesting things for my kids to touch and interact with when they got out of the car and looked around, and more in-depth exhibits about the heartier and technology. The whole thing was very well organized, and reasonably priced.
Just a fantastic way to learn more about the future of energy and an iconic element of the California landscape!
This place was a blast! These mega machine are truly a sight to behold when standing under one! Insight to the past and the stepping stones taken to get them here are amazing to learn about. It's a great guided tour you take in your car but are encouraged to get out, walk around the exhibits and snap some photos. I enjoyed this roadside stop immensely and it forced me to check out You Tube to learn more. Simply amazing. Thank you!
A very cool tour! Also a very interesting gift shop!!!
We did the golf cart tour with Bill the docent. We learned A LOT! I had been on a wind turbine tour in the Palm Springs area over15 years ago & things have changed. The turbines are much more efficient (but still require maintenance). We saw old turbines & some were only functional for a few years. Hope they last longer now.
Every time I would drive by these Windmills on the way to Palm Springs I was always curious to see them up close and learn more. Finally I decided to take a tour and see what it was all about.
The tour is $49 for two adults in their car, kids 12 and under are free. Each additional adult in the car is $10 per person.
I recommend downloading the ‘Palm Spring Windmill Tours’ app. You will need it to do the tour properly. (They have WiFi at the ‘tour center’ that you can use to download the app as well).
Tip: If you only want to take photos of the windmills you can do so outside of the fence (they say that it’s for insurance reasons). If you’re not interested in renewable energy or wind turbines this is a good choice for you because you’ll find the tour quite boring.
The tour begins with being checked in at the Tour Center. (We purchased our tickets here as a walk in instead of buying them ahead of time). Here you’ll find some informative signs along the wall as well as watch a 13 minute video about Windmills and renewable energy. After you’re done exploring the Tour Center you can get into your vehicle, open the app and drive around the property. You will drive slowly along a dirt road. We would pull over and listen to the audio guide and then get out and take photos.
Definitely loved the ‘date shake’ they recommended we grab after the tour. It was our first ones ever so we’re glad we tried ‘the best’.
